The Songkran of the northern region or so called “Pee Mai Muang” starts from the 13th April which is called “Sang Kan Long Day”, which is believed to be the last day of the old year. On this day, there are fireworks since it is believed to be the way of exorcising all the bad lucks away. In the evening, there is a big merit event that allows the people to worship the provincial Buddha statue, which is paraded all over the city. On the 14th April or “Nao Day” is the day to avoid saying bad words to each other. On the 15th April or “Payawan Day” or “Talerngsok Day” is the day the people usually go to make merit in the morning and ask for the blessings from their families in the afternoon. On the 16th April or “Pak Pee Day”, the people usually go to ask for blessings at the temples. On the 17th April or “Pak Duan Day”, which is the last day of Songkran, the villagers usually exorcise all the bad lucks away. This is the unique event of the northern part of Thailand especially in Chiangmai.

Songkran at Prapadaeng or originally called “Songkran Pak Lud” is the Songkran that was inherited from the Raman culture. The identity of the Raman style Songkran, especially one week after the 13th of April, is that every village will parade the Songkran Pageant, Flower parades and the Raman villagers that dress up in the Thai Raman Style. These Raman villagers will set the bird and fish free for merit as they believe that this brings auspiciousity. Chiang Mai Provincial Administration and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Chiang Mai Office are joining hands to organise the Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2014 from 7 to 9 February.
To take place at Suan Buak Hat in Mueang district, the 38th Chiang Mai Flower Festival will turn the park into an open-air exhibition venue where local and international visitors can marvel at a magnificent tapestry of floral splendor that blankets the land. Elsewhere in the city, there can be found beautiful displays of various kinds of blooming flowers, including the Damask Rose, which is a variety found only in Chiang Mai.
One of the festival’s highlights is the parade of elaborately-decorated flower floats at the opening ceremony, to be held on 8 February, 2014. The procession starts from Nawarat Bridge and going along Thapae Road, Kotchasarn Road and Changlor Road, before turning into Arak Road and concluding at Suan Buak Hat. The floral floats compete to find the most beautiful and creative display, and the best float for cultural preservation receives a trophy.
Other highlights include several kinds of plant and flowers competitions, Miss Flower and Miss Flower Blooming Beauty Contest, agricultural exhibitions, plant and flower sales, mini garden landscaping, local product fair and mini concerts.
Activity times during the three-day event at Suan Buak Hat are from 09.00 to 24.00 hrs.
